Modeling to Understand and Improve Your Brake System
From the series: MATLAB and Simulink Basics
Mohamed Samy, ASU Racing Team
Understand and improve your brake system using modeling. Mohamed Barakat, of ASU Racing Team, and Christoph Hahn, of MathWorks, introduce you to an approach using Simulink where safety is key.
A safe and robust braking system is a major component of a Formula Student racecar and in this episode you will learn how to model it, to understand it better and increase performance. All models related to this episode can be found on MATLAB Central FileExchange and a SAE paper has been published providing the opportunity to have a more in-depth look.
The core of the brake system is modeled using Simulink, containing all physical components such as the piston and the limiter valve. Moreover, Mohamed has used the results obtained from this model to interface with other simulation tools such as Ansys for more detailed stress analysis. A model validation using a dynamometer showed close agreement (12%) between modeled and real-world deceleration which is really good taking the complexity of the system into account.
