What is Gaussian Mixture Model?

Could you please explain what is Gaussian Mixture Model for updating background image in Motion Detection? Please explain me step by step calculation of GMM theory with example.

Isn't it easier to just google it and/or read the Matlab documentation? I have used GMMs but not for Motion Detection but there is no point me just writing down what you could just search for yourself!
