Why simulink double click or block properties respond slow

I've Matlab R2021b version that is installed on a higher end laptop now and the respond in Simulink to add new block or to open properties of a block is slow. The lower end laptops that I used Simulink on before responded as soon as I double click it.

On my system, with 2022a, it takes FIVE seconds to bring up the menu when right clicking on a block. But no problem with the double left click to bring up the block parameters. Until I realized what was going on, I thought my right-click button was broken.

We are experiencing the same issue. Both me and my colleague replaced our laptops with new, higher end laptops and since then Simulink (R2021b) is slow when opening the properties dialog of a block. Simulink worked fine before on our previous laptops.

There are no other ressource intensive programs running in parallel or in the background and we tried a reboot of our laptops.

I am experiencing the same issue using R2020a update 8 on Windows 10. I had not seen the issue running R2020a update 7, but I can't completely confirm that it was the update, because the change from R2020a update 7 to 8 happened simultaneously with replacing my previous laptop (so it is a new install of Windows as well). I also deleted my MATLAB profile/settings directory with no effect.

This happens with no other load on the system, and the model is not running. MATLAB itself is fine, it is just the Simulink GUI responsiveness that has degraded, even for a trivial model with a few blocks. For example, right clicking on a block to change the background color, there is a lag of 2-3 seconds for each drill down of the context menu.

I just submitted a help ticket, and I would encourage anyone else experiencing this issue to do the same.

I submitted a service request a few weeks ago and have been going back and forth with them regularly since. Tech Support has been very responsive, and we've gotten side-tracked on other issues that we thought may have been related, but I still don't have a solution to my slow right-click response, i..e, just bringing up the menu in response to a right-click on a block.

I too would encourage anyone having similar problems to open a Service Request.

There might be a few different reasons for that.

(1) Something is running on the back.If your model is computationally heavy and you try to open block properties at the same time, it would be slow.

(2) Or your MATLAB model is running while you are trying to see bl;ock properties that might also slow down the responsiveness of Simulink

(3) Or some other app or apps are running and you are trying to open block properties in Simulink.

One try out option might be to close and restart your MATLAB/Simulink.

Another way is re-start your laptop :) as usual.

Actually I have the exact same model with same conditions and I already have restarted matlab and laptop. But on the higher end laptop it responds much slower.

Our organization recently upgraded from R2020b to R2023b. Everyone is reporting the same issue: when double-clicking in the canvas area inside a model to open up the block search, it takes FOREVER to open (can be from 10-30 seconds). It is extremely annoying. I don't think this has anything to do with background processes, other apps running, etc. This is happening to everyone.

When I had this happen for the first time I also thought that it might some program running in the background that was causing Simulink to respond so slowly so I restarted my computer but the issue persists with R2023b even with a completely blank Simulink model. This is definitely an issue with R2023b vs. R2020b.

I have the same problem. It does not matter whether it is a blank new model or a very complicated model, or whether there are many background tasks running.

I would like to add that there are multiple places where this sluggishness is consitently observed by numerous people after we upgraded from R2020b to R2023b.

• Double-clicking the canvas area to open a block search (the original problem reported here).
• Double-clicking to open the dialog of a "Bus Element In" block.
• Double-clicking to open the dialog of a "Bus Selector" block.
• Launching Matlab Help:

For all of these it takes 10-30 seconds for the dialogs/windows to either open, or to populate and display anything after opening.

same problem with R2023b Update 7. Opening the dialog for "Searching blocks" takes about 10 seconds. Without fixing this issue the working in Simulink bacame really terrible. Any hints how to investigate this problem ?

If the computer is completely disconnected from network/internet, the Matlab/Simulink is running fast again.

Great find. R2022a, disconnecting from WiFi solved my right-click problem. I submitted a service request with Tech Support; will follow up as comment on the top level question with any useful information.

I have this same problem in 2023b Update 7. Can't really work with it.

Unfortunately disabling my WiFi, BlueTooth, and disconnecting from the internet did not fix the problem for me. I will open up a support ticket with MathWorks and see if they can help. (I run R2020a and R2021b, same issue with both, but R2021b seems about 2x slower to load block parameters/right click menu than R2020a)

Update: I worked with the MathWorks team and narrowed it down to my organization's antivirus software, SentinelOne. Got my IT department to temporarily disable SentinelOne, now block parameter windows and right click menus load lightning fast. Our theory is that SentinelOIne must think that the block parameter windows and right click menues are potentially dangerous pop-up windows, so it's getting in the way every time. Hope this helps you all dealing with similar issues.

@Henry Knutzen very glad you posed this. I had exactly the same issue with my organisations SentinelOne antivirus software. As with you, once it was disabled the block parameter windows and right click menus operated as they should do. Thanks!
