Plotting a potential energy function

So I am a little lost. We are supposed Plot the quantity E = 1/2*m*v^2 + 1/2*k*y^2 as a function of time. im sure this has something to do with deriving this equation but I can not figure it out. I dont know m or v or k or y. I might know m and k though cause i can use my numbers from the previous equation. I think that ill have to create a function file but i get lost from there. Any help?
