How to control a 4-Digit 7-Segment Display?

I'm trying to setup a 4-digit 7-segment display and write to it using a 74HC595 shift register, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it. There was a MathWorks tutorial for a 1-digit display, but the code from that wasn't helpful. How would I go about developing the code for the 4-digit?

I should have specified in my main post that I am using an Arduino, and do not have access to a Raspberry Pi. I appreciate the response.
