Matlab no longer loading - startup error

For some reason my matlab no longer works and i get this error at startup:

Caught "std::exception" Exception message is: fl:filesystem:PathNotFound

how do i fix this, as far as i know i haven't changed anything since it was last working?

Try renaming your preferences directory

That will cause the preferences to be regenerated, possibly solving the problem.
