What will happen if sampling rate is less than Nyquist rate?

Assume the signal has highest frequency component is 500 Hz, what would be the sampling rate of ur choice, justify, what happens if chose less than that, show with matlab

According to Nyquist rule, the sampling frequency in this case should be more than 1000 Hz.
