Making the white background of a contour map transparent

Hello,

I'm wondering if there is a way to make the white background of a contour map transparent. I want to export a contour map with transparent background, so I can overlay it on a kmz/kml file on Google Earth.

I tried using export_fig but it is very complicated for me since I'm still learning MATLAB. I'd appreciate any pointers or advices.
