help browser fails to navigate the hyperlink to msword doc bookmark

I've booked marked a spot in my backGround.doc, so link is like \\\file\....\ backGround.doc#myBookMark

I've added a link to my helpDoc.html to this bookmark.

In MSWord with the helpDoc.html open, a ctrl-click opens backGround.doc and takes me to the the bookmark. So far, good.

In my simulink diagram, my mask documentation points to helpDoc.html.

When I select 'help' from the mask gui, helpDoc.html opens fine. (So we're not accessing helpDoc.html using the matlab help browser).

When I click on the link to backGround.doc#myBookMark backGround.doc opens, but the document does not navigate to #myBookMark.

Any ideas. This is on R2017a. Haven't tried other versions.
