How do I extract objects features from an image?

Hello,

I just started to learn image processing using Matlab. I have an image and I would like to extract the features of objects from that image such as no of object (count) and pixel area, length/width (if possible) for each individual objects. I would appreciate if somebody could provide me direction on this.
