Speech Synthesizer problem: intonation

Hi, I have a problem. I'm working on a speech synthesizer, and I would like the word "how" to be read in a different way from "how?". I would like to know if there is a simple way (for example, changing some parameters - frequency, magnitudo - of the sound) to do this, without using prosody. Thanks.
