Upgraded from 2017b to 2019a. When opening models in 2019a they do not open in a new window (as they did in 2017b), they open in current window with the file structure above. Is there a way to turn this off? I really like double clicking and opeing up in new window becuase if you go back up to the top level model you dont have to drill down through to get to the one you were working on.
Also, i have a couple of models that i now have to "open as top model" just to be able to edit the model at all. I do not like this and it doesn't make sense?

Are you opening a referenced model? They used to automatically open in a new window, while in 2019a now they are opened as if they would be a regular subsystem, meaning in the same window.
See the release notes under 'Component-Based Modeling' and 'Model Reference: Open referenced models in the same window as their parent models'. Also this link.

We are opening Reference Models. This "upgrade" does not help with switching between Reference models using the Tab structure. I will have to continually drill down to the lower model instead of switching between pages.

You can hold the shift key while double clicking the referenced model to open it as a new window.

When you are referring to opening models, I assume that you are opening a sub model by clicking on it from top model. Here is the similar question found which you can refer to: https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/94147-how-can-i-open-a-subsystem-in-a-simulink-model-in-a-new-window-in-simulink-8-0-r2012b
