How to implement 1D zero-phase Gaussian filter?

I'm trying to implement a Gaussian lowpass filter and apply it to my signal, then find resulting signal extrema.

How is it possible to implement a zero-phase (no time shifts) Gaussian filter, since it is so important to find the exact extremum sample?
