Typical novice algorithm: do edge detection as the first step no matter what, even if it's way more complicated than a simple thresholding. Anyway, you can look here for algorithms: http://www.visionbib.com/bibliography/contentschar.html#OCR,%20Document%20Analysis%20and%20Character%20Recognition%20Systems though I'd suspect most people would now suggest deep learning as the approach to take.
