Declaring global handle or variable

   Hello I am using uicontrol() under a function pro_laminate(). The code looks like this

function pro_laminate() h1 = uicontrol('Parent',h0,'Tag','lm','style', 'text', 'string','Laminate Name:','Position',[0 30 100 20]); a=10;

The handle 'h1' and data 'a' looks private with in the function. I am not able to access the handle or data in other function can somebody help me. How to declare these variable so that I can access in other function. If I can use setappdata() and getappdata() function then how to use please help me in this regard.
