two related problems (?) workspace size and xlsread

I've got two issues happening intermittently.
1) Save a large workspace. Saves fine, but is > 1GB in size. When I go to read it back in the load immediately fails saying "Can't read file...."
the file exists, has write access, etc.
I've tried reading it a single variable at a time and find the single values and structures are fine, but the long lists (arrays) of class objects fail.
When I try to isolate these, the issue seems more size related than object related.
2) Even more intermittent. My code reads in data from an excel file using xlsread. Every once in a while the background system process that responds to these requests dies. When I try to xlsread after that I get "In basic mode, sheet argument must be a string." Well, it is a string, but only a reboot will get that background process running again and properly responding to the request.
Do either of these problems ring a bell for anyone?
Thanks in advance.

Please copy the complete error message - is there anything behind "Can't read file ...."?
"The issue seems *more* size related than object related"?! Does it just seem, or is it size related? And what exactly means "more" here? Does it produce a "harder" error?

1) In order to save large files you have to save it as -V7.3 Look it up in:
doc save
2) No idea.
Good Luck!

Neglected to mention that I am using the -v7.3 flag. Thanks though.
