How to compare two different binary images

I have the cropped image of pencil. I want to count the number of pencils in an image where each pencil can be of different sizes. How can I compare and count? How can I iterate and find? Do i need to zoom/shrink or correlate ? Please guide me with sample code or materials or steps to follow. Thanks.
