I used problem 8.10 from Nise's Control Systems Engineering as en exercise in class. To show the result I first plotted the function using the Control System Designer App in Matlab, and was surprised by the results that did not at all match the textbook's given answer. Using the rlocus function in Matlab does give the 'official answer' result. The difference is significant: the Control System Designer App shows a root locus going off towards the positive infinity along the real axis. Numerator of the given transfer function is (s+2)(s^2+4), denominator is (s+4)(s-2). So the system has 2 real poles at +2 and -4, a real zero at -2 and complex zero's at +/- 2j. Only when moving the positive pole left across the imaginary axis results in similar root locus shape in both tools. Can this be explained?
