Why do I receive an error that my license number or activation key does not match any existing license number or activation key?

Why do I receive the following error message when trying to link my MathWorks Account to my license:

The license number or activation key did not match any existing license number or activation key. Please try again.

This error will occur when you try to link your MathWorks Account to a license that is no longer active or a trial license. Please try to activate with a current MATLAB license.
