Why do I receive the error "java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError" when trying to start MATLAB?

This error will manifest if you are using the MATLAB_JAVA environment variable to specify a non-default MATLAB Java version. We strongly recommend that you unset the variable and use the default MATLAB Java version, as using alternative Java virtual machines can cause issues within MATLAB.
