On Linux, why do the Editor and Command Window freeze when scrolling?

I'm running Ubuntu 16.4 with Gnome on a Dell XPS 13 9360 with Intel Iris 540 graphics and a QHD+ screen.
I have to lower the resolution before starting Matlab to avoid super-tiny windows/fonts. A better solution to that would also be appreciated, but the issue shown in the image below is more pressing.

A possible workaround for the text display issue is to place the attached java.opts (zipped) file in the following location:
matlabroot\bin\<arch>
where 'matlabroot' is the MATLAB installation directory and 'arch' is the directory specific to architecture of the system (e.g., win32, win64, gnlx86, glnxa64, etc.)
