How to find the minimum pixel value of a object in a image excluding background?

I want to make the background black other than the object(souvenir) in a image. I assume that if I know the minimum value of object pixel then by considering this value as a threshold, the other pixels below threshold cane be made 0. Is there any other method to do this?
