counting the numbers

i have a dataset

<=50
<=50
>50
<=50

i called these vales using xlsread and i ger

raw=
'>50'
'<=50'
'<=50'
'>50'
'<=50'

now i want to count how many values are in >50,<=50

Do you mean the file contains literal strings, and you want to know how many of each string occurs? If so, then

sum( strcmp('>50', raw) )
