It does not give decimal output. It returns a character array in which each position is '0' (the character) or '1' (the character), which is one of the several ways of representing binary.
MATLAB does not have a data type which is "binary", but all of the numeric data types together with logical() and char() are internally represented as binary.
You need to indicate what you want the class() of the output of the routine to be and what value you want to use to represent binary 0 and what value you want to use to represent binary 1.
