Write code that simulates creating data, adds number of bytes in the data to the number of bytes of payload attempted to for transmission, creating packet from the data, add number of bytes in the packet to the number of bytes put out on the network. Adding noise to the packet. Then simulate removing noise, and add the number of bytes in the noise-removed version to the number of bytes received on the network. Removing from the packet wrapper, and checking whether the input is the same as the output. If it was the same, add the bytes transmitted to the number of bytes successfully transmitted. After a time period, the number of bytes successfully transmitted divided by the length of time being simulated is the throughput; the number of bytes attempted for transmission divided by the network rate times the time is the network occupancy (you might need to make a correction for any mandatory inter-packet silence.) And so on -- increment appropriate counters at appropriate times.
