Hi All
I want to find a fast and best way to measure some complex pieces, while there are so many expensive 2D and 3D scanners, I wanted to know how much precise is it to do so, to measure the curves , radius and other complex dimensions ? I tried to take a photo, but noticed that there are a lot of distortions in the photo that show the straight lines curved. So I need to get some advises to how to get an appropriate photo , since most of the scanners, have an operator that they define some points manually, so I have only the coordinated, I wanted to know if the automatic recognition does better work

Automated measurement of the parameters may do a better job than manual tracing but it really depends on how nice the boundary is. If it's really weird looking with lots of complicated structure, it may require some expert knowledge and in that case, manual tracing would be better. A lot of biological images fit into that category.

You should consult a machine vision vendor. You probably can use monochrome cameras, and probably should use telecentric lenses and telecentric illumination. The vendor may have software for simple gauging/calipering operations so you may not need to write anything yourself in MATLAB.
