segmenting the object from image

how can i segment the defect from the image automatically using matlab. I applied the mathematical morphology and edge detection techniques to segment the defect in a glass image. Now, i want to find a way to separate that defect from rest of the image automatically so that i may be able to design an automatic defect detection system.
