How to open H.265 video?

I colelcted some video data that was compressed using h.265 and I am having trouble opening it with any video editor and Matlab. Admittedly, I don't really understand what h.265 compression is and how it is differnent from h.264. Is it possible to open .avi files compressed with h.265 in Matlab?
