Even when using the example given in the documentation
f = figure;
d = gallery('integerdata',100,[10 3],0);
t = uitable(f,'Data',d,'ColumnWidth',{50});
I get the following error

Do you happen to have 3DJava installed?

Hi, I have the same problem (Matlab 2015a too). Install 3DJava doesn't resolve the error.
I have also an error windows with the message:
updateValueTableModel
Undefinied function 'image' for input arguments of 'cell'.
is real

My mention of Java3D was due to one of the very few postings I found mentioning the same error message, http://imagej.1557.x6.nabble.com/Problem-when-Using-Fiji-for-3D-Visualization-from-Matlab-td5001134.html in which someone reports this error message in conjunction with using Java3D, so I was looking for a common element.
