I want a function to be repeatedly called within an AppDesigner application

I want to have an application that repeatedly calls a function. There are pauses in that function and it does various executions based on a defined state to handle continuous looping. Where do I place code that will be repeatly processed in an App Design script? I see how to do various tasks when an action occurs, but I want this function to run continually. Other buttons within the app will control the underlying code, but it needs to constantly be checking outside parameters.

@Jeff Beckstead - you could perhaps use a timer to periodically call your function. The timer might start when the app starts and so would exist for the lifetime of the app.
