Difference between Arduino IO package for MATLAB (2013 and before) and MATLAB Arduino Support Package for 2014a and above ?

I want to know the differences between using the above two in terms of limitations of each with respect to the things you can do? Which one is better to use and provides more functionalities? I am currently running MATLAB 2013a and cant decide to install 2014a for support package or continue using 2013a with Arduino IO Package. I havent yet decided the application I want to use the Arduino for but it would be great if you could elaborate upon the differences between the two ?
