how can I use matlab to superimpose images with uniformly faded alpha data overlay

Dear Mathwork community and support team,

I am a novice Matlab image processing user. I am trying to find an appropriate code to overlay two images such that the top image overlay is opaque in the center and uniformly fades or blurs to completely transparent in each direction show the bottom image. I looked at a similar discussion on using alpha data but I was unable to understand how to apply the fade / blur and transparent algorithm using alpha data and repmat functions in all directions of the image(<http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/100086-how-do-i-superimpose-images-in-matlab)>.

Please can someone with good understanding of matlab image processing help me with this question.

Thanks a lot for responding back and providing an alternative to superimpose images but I also want to be able to control the fading in such a way that it fades from the center of the image to outwards in addition to fusing two images. I need to create a GUI for my research capable of performing these functions. Your expertise will be much helpful. Thanks a lot for the time.

You can apply a weighted average

w = 0.25; % or whatever...
newImage = w*double(image1) + (1-w) * double(image2);
imshow(newImage, []);
