What is the difference between geographic plotting and the mapping toolbox?

Hi,
I've made a simple geographic plot with geoscatter and geoplot (below). Now, I'd like to format the graph and add some things like a north arrow, better scale bar, etc.
But when I try commands like "northarrow", it seems that my geoplot is not a map. And if I look up the help on geographic plotting commands, they seem to be part of the regular Matlab and not the Mapping Toolbox. So... can someone clarify the differences between geographic plotting and the Mapping Toolbox, and why you might use one over the other? Thanks in advance...

The geographic plotting module functionality is part of the MATLAB foundation and provides the most basic and fundamental plotting functionality. The Mapping Toolbox provides more detailed and comprehensive functionality and is an extension of the geographic plotting module.
Similarities: Plotting geometric map.
Difference: Mapping Toolbox usually has more extensions than geographic plotting, including all of them.
Choice: If it meets your personal needs, then go straight to MATLAB Basic Plotting, if not, consider Mapping Toolbox.
