R2014a windows 8.1 64bit setup.exe doesn't install matlab

I just downloaded R2014a 64bit for my Win8.1 laptop. I get the .exe which unzips itself into _temp_matlab_R2014a_win64
I go into this folder and run setup.exe.
It proceeds to do the Microsoft C++ Redistributable thing and then nothing. The window just closes and then nothing happens. No error, nothing. I've checked for a background process, run as an admin and moved the folder out of downloads.
The instructions say that I need to log into the installer with my mathworks id and such, but it doesn't get to that point.
Thanks in advance for any help/advice. I need this for a project so semiurgent.

Hi all, I found a way to get Matlab installed (on my Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S), running Windows 8.1. The first part of the Answer given here seemed to work (though the questioner’s symptoms were different to mine, which were more like the ones in this post):
I used just the first step of those suggestions (without all of the later steps where it's identified what might be causing a problem - i.e. Step 1, parts a to g, and then something like Step 7 to return back to the original settings after everything installed).
It seems to be installed and working OK so far (I've not had the time to test it fully yet, but it seems OK).
Hope that helps you, too.

I have exactly the same problem. As I understand it is caused by impossibility to install Visual Studio C++ 2008 redistributable on Win 8 machine. Matlab requires a C++ compiler to be installed (<http://www.mathworks.com/support/compilers/R2014a/index.html>) and it seems that there is no free option for Win 8.1. SDK 7.1 doesn't support Win 8. The only free version is Visual Studio Express 2013. But it is not listed as a Matlab supported compiler. Any solution?

To clarify, MATLAB does not generically require a compiler. A compiler is only required for MEX and a other features and products as identified in the column headers of the supported compilers page.
