Electro-Mechanical System Optimization using Simulation
Overview
Hardware prototypes, especially of large-scale multi-physics safety critical industrial systems, are expensive and often only available late in the software-hardware integration process. Additionally, legacy systems can be expensive to take offline for control software upgrades and testing. As a result, many companies are looking into system simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing to allow more upfront testing and decrease system downtime.
In this webinar, we will show how to leverage MathWorks tools as a development and test environment for large multi-physics machinery. In particular, we will focus on building and optimizing a system-level simulation of a Drawworks hoisting system used in the oil/gas industry, including the supervisory controls that would end up on a PLC in the field. The seminar will show how designing with simulation helps minimize time for testing of new safety critical algorithms and improves equipment uptime in the field.

About the Presenters
Jonathan LeSage is a Senior Application Engineer specializing in the Energy Production and Industrial Automation industries and has been with the MathWorks since 2013. His focus at the MathWorks is on building models of multi-physics systems and then leveraging them for control design, hardware-in-the-loop testing and industrial PLC algorithm code generation. Jonathan holds a B.S. and a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin specializing in power systems, controls, and machine learning.
Terri Xiao is an Industry Manager in the Industrial Automation and Machinery area and have been with the MathWorks since 2009 starting as an Application Engineer. Her focus at the MathWorks is strategy and business development in automation components, Oil and Gas, and Semiconductor equipment area.
