How can I specify the significant digits in a tick label?

I would like to be able to specify how many significant digits I want to appear on my tick labels.

The Matlab Central file extendticklabel.m extends the number of significant figures for axes tick labels. This file can be found by searching for 'extendticklabel' in the MATLAB Central website: https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/
