System identification tool Transfer Function, how does it work ?

Hi, I used the MATLAB system identification tool to obtain a transfer function from a step response for my University project, I can't find any documentation that goes into some details about how this software can model a transfer function so I can explain how the software works. Does anyone know any source where I can read about this ? Thanks.
