beep, error(''), and errors while running scripts produce no sound

Multiple (3) users here of win10 with R2019b or R2020a: beep/error not working.

I've tried beep on/off and confirmed beep status. I've tried/confirmed windows default sounds. I've adjusted/checked windows Volume [mixer] levels. I've restarted matlab.

[ load('train'); sound(y,Fs) Does work. ]

Any ideas?
