Similarity between 3D triangular surfaces

What is the simplest method for calculating similarity between two 3D triangular surfaces (eg generated with trisurf)?  It seems simplest to project 3D surfaces on to 2D plots and then use conventional image similarity functions but I cannot find a definite answer.

I guess using Structural Similarity(SSIM) method with those two images might be another apporach. Refer to the following documentation:
