3D Dataset Matching

Hi

I am working with two similar datasets that I am trying to compare with each other. Each point in these datasets contains an X and Y coordinates and arbitrary value. My aim is to match these datasets with each other in a way that alignment error is kept to the minimum. Is there a known practice to solve this problem?
