Display field of regard obstructions on hemispherical graphic

I need to visually represent the field of regard of a sensor. The sensor is capable of a line of sight is -15degrees to +90degrees in elevation and 360degrees in azimuth. However, there are regions in the az-el space where the line of sight is obstructed. My objective is to indicate the obstructed regions on a hemisphere. I'd like to only color facets that are obstructed and have the color reflect what is obstructing it (I have 4 or 5 types of objects). I can use sphere and surf to create the hemisphere but I do not know how to change the facet color. Also, I'd like to have more facets than 200 generated by 'sphere' though not absolutly necessary.
