Pattern Recognition; Pattern Comparison

I am working on a project that will compare the abdomenal patterning of spiders to predator faces. I'm trying to build a code that can detect the salient properties of a predator face, and give a percent similarity to the images of a spider abdomen. Any advice or starter code would be appreciated.
