Java error when changing display screens - Ubuntu

If my laptop is connected to a display monitor and run my simulations and disconnect the display monitor, Matlab hangs displaying java error in console and I have to restart Matlab again. Similarly, If I have Matlab running on my laptop, if I connect an external display , I get error. My system is Ubuntu- I haven't experienced this issue with windows.
