How to take symbolic fourier transform of a function with two variables?

I have a function: P(x,y)=exp(-a/2*(x^2+y^2)) and I want its fourier transform in terms of say, (u,v). The "fourier" command in MATLAB works just fine for functions with one variable, but I don't know how to do it for such a function. Please help.
