Save Gui Panel to pdf file

I know there already exist some threads on this topic, but non of them appear to be helping me.

I need to take high resolution images of my Matalb GUI which consists of multiple panels. When saving the main GUI figure as follows:

 print(handles.mainfig, '-dpdf', 'Filename.pdf')

an empty file is created. I am not sure if it has something to do with the way the panels are implemented. It is not possible to directly refer to to the panels because these objects are not figures.

Have you tried export_fig from the file exchange?
