Why does the hdftool window come up blank and without functionality in MatLab2017b (Mac)?

I am running Matlab2017b on a MacBookPro 2013, MacOSX10.12.6: trying to import from hdf4 files and opening hdftool either from command line or via menu brings up an empty, non-interactive window. The functionality (as in 2017a) is gone. What to do?
