Converting a cell to string

Specific problem is that
>> isequal(cellstr(dd), dd)
ans =
1
More generally I am trying to convert data such as 'P__ID" and '50 kPa(g)' to strings so that I can work with the data. My questions is what is the best way to right a cell array into a string array where the cells are data imported from excel. I am using the importdata command.

Use char.
