Hi,
MATLAB 7.1 is R14SP3 which wasn't supported on WIN7:
It is most likely that you will get a lot of troubles with that old MATLAB on Windows 7. Best here would to get a new version, which has pretty more cool features than R14SP3.
And if you like to do some compiling stuff, you will get troubles in R14SP3 by finding the old versions of the supported compilers.

None of the releases that predate the year naming scheme are expected to work in Windows 7.

While I assume that Matlab6.5 is actually working under Window 7, the license service fails. It looks like the old servbice checks HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\..., but in Windows 7 this key is called "...\Windows NT\..." - what a funny naming scheme!
However, if the license service can be tweaked to run, Matlab itself will not be stable due to the very old Java version. Even a Windows 2000 compatibility mode will not catch all problems.
Considering the required work to get the old Matlab to run and the high probability of unexpected (expected!) incompatibilities, buying a new Matlab version is the most efficient solution.
I assume, that my experiences with 6.5 can be extrapolated to 7.1.

I've installed WinXP/32 in the Windows Virtual PC to run Matlab 6.5. The installation was easy and it works seamlessly.
I did not have any troubles to get a compiler for the old Matlab versions. At least the LCC is still working - but better replace it by a current version downloaded from the net.
