Transfer to IDL

Dear smart people,

I would like to know if there are ways to export my MATLAB workspace variables over to IDL?

No-one seems to have bothered to build an interface that goes either way (or at least no-one seems to have mentioned having built one.)

A program that claims to convert IDL source to MATLAB is at http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Math-Scientific/IDL2Matlab.shtml but I have never looked at it. I know that isn't what you are looking for, but it is one of the most common IDL / MATLAB questions.

The GUI program 'restore_idl' converts IDL data to matlab, so might be a good starting point to develop code to go the other way.
