Identify/Classify a given bar code image as either 1 D or 2 D

I intend to determine an algorithm that can classify a given bar code image as either 1D or 2D with high accuracies. I would be grateful if you can suggest a few ideas to get started .

Are we talking about potential PDF417 2D barcodes, or are we talking SpotCode, or are we talking MaxiCode, or QR code, or ... ?
